Notes:

dpkg is the package manager that is used by Debian. It is actually the first (or one of the very first, I'm not completely sure) package managers for Linux, but it has evolved greatly since then.

Originally written in perl and later rewritten in C it is now a potent system that has made it possible to do in-place installation, upgrade and removal of packages.
