dmailbd5 is a mail-fetching protocol (and implementation) designed to be much more efficient over low-speed high-latency links than POP3 or IMAP4. It uses strong encryption/authentification and compresses the data for transport. First tests showed speed advantages over POP3-over-ssh in the range of 10-20 times faster. My dmailb5 Implementation includes a server and a client working both with Maildirs. Up to now I haven't made up a package, it is not quite ready but I use it for my own mail.
