The Spread Toolkit provides group-oriented messaging services for local and wide-area networks. These services include reliable multicast, ordered multicasts, publish-subscribe, strong group membership, and message delivery guarantees.

Spread is useful for building replicated databases, clustered servers, distributed logging, persistent-state scalable middleware, multicast ftp, group collaboration tools, and lots of other applications that use the idea of clusters or groups.

Spread has been used in the following projects:

mod_log_spread: for Apache cluster logging.
Apache-SSL: for distributed SSL-key caching.
multicast video and text conferencing
OASIS: distributed shared memory system.

FOAF updates: Trust rankings are now exported, making the data available to other users and websites. An external FOAF URI has been added, allowing users to link to an additional FOAF file.
