GnewsAlert is the closest thing to MSNBC's News Alert you will find on GNOME. It is a panel applet that gathers news from

ZDNET
SLASHDOT
FRESHMEAT
LINUX.COM
BITBUILDER
etc...

and alerts you with a little popup when something new happens.
