Notes: CinePaint (formerly Film Gimp) is the most successful open source tool in feature motion picture work to date and has been used in the production of movies such as Harry Potter (Rhythm & Hues), Scooby Doo and Stuart Little.
An extension of the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), Cinepaint is designed to operate upon a series of images (with a frame manager) and in 16-bit linear or floating point colour depths. With sixteen bits per component instead of eight, Cinepaint has much more colour depth capacity than the Gimp.
Note: Although this is more colours than can be displayed at once on a conventional 24-bit monitor (8-bit per component), 16-bit makes a difference when working with the higher dynamic range of film.
