Charcoal is a modern open source graphics library that supports the PostScript/PDF imaging model with the addition of antialiasing and transparency. It has built-in support for color management via littlecms. Unhinted, subpixel-positioned, scalable fonts are rendered with freetype2. Charcoal is used in the MuPdf viewer to render PDF documents.
See also Fitz, which is slated to become the standard 2D imaging library. Unfortunately, Fitz is still vapourware, so in the meanwhile Charcoal is the only open source library to rival the functionality of Mac OS X's Quartz 2D.
New HTML Parser: The long-awaited libxml2 based HTML parser code is live. It needs further work but already handles most markup better than the original parser.
