Older blog entries for zifnab (starting at number 4)

Last time, I didn't update my page for 2 months ... now it has been 5 months .. I'm not very productive here ...

Most of my time taken by my new job ... nice hardware, nice people ... but too much Windows ... I guess I'll have to live with this ...

The bobot++ hasn't evolved a lot since its entry on sourceforge ... some updates are on my local hard drive and some others are in my mind but I didn't take that much time for this ...

On the other sides, I have one or two others things to commit ...

  • Ported fping to HP-UX (just a 3-4 lines diff ...)
  • Built KDE2.2 on SGI Irix with the MIPSpro Compiler ... not very difficult (well ... it depends which CVS version you take, anyway), but some patches needed ...

What did happen since my last diary entry ...

I'll probably choose my new job this week, to begin in two weeks. Anyway, i will be doing the sysadmin on big and nice systems running some kind of Unix, that's good enough for me.

The bobot++ is on SourceForge now, sources on CVS, *wheee*

Got 2 new machines. I will probably host some web services on them, instead of my station which is running Debian/sid

During the last week-ends, i have been playing with AxKit, an XML application plateform using Perl and mod_perl. Pretty nice and easier to use than Cocoon, but I have a few problems with Charsets: As it is XML, it wants to send UTF-8 but I want ISO-8859-1. Currently, on some pages it is sending empty responses -- not cool.

It has been a long time since the last diary entry, here...

Well, there isn't much to say since the last time. NYE was just another day, listening music and having fun on IRC.

Current job is boring ... <insert spiffy ad "hire me">

Still haven't decided to take over the development of the bobot++, but since there isn't any bug in the BTS of Debian, there is no big need for this *g*. Well, in fact, since i have a few nice features ready, that would be nice. We'll see ...

Decided recently that i will try to switch the web server for the LUG, going to thttpd, which seems nice and will probably do everything i want him to do for the moment. 'cause, i still don't understand _why_ apache-common depends on libmysqlclient6. Not that i don't like mysql (i'm still using it most of the time), but do they really have to depend on such a old version (lib...10 is the current one in sid).

I will probably keep Apache for the fun (having `n' different modules and programming possibilities is fun, even when php4 is still b0rken). Tomcat is installed, and i'll try to add Cocoon by hand (i have been told that the version currently in Debian is quite old, so ...). Once it works, i'll try to write a few pages in XML. And then i'll have to make an offline version in order to publish it with thttpd (and if Cocoon can't do it, i'll try to remember how Python and XML work together :-).

ObRecovery: new HI-FI system. *yummy*. 'nuff said

End of the week. I need to sleep, really.

Two days ago, a funny thing happened at work. We've been waiting for our provider to allow us to do SNMP queries for a few months, now, and some people (decisions-maker especially) were wondering if our pipe was big enough; But without statistics, it was hard to tell. Soooo... There was this guy i met 2 or 3 times "in real life" and who was often on IRC.I knew that he was working (almost) for our provider. So here i am, asking him if he can help me getting those stats. And YES ! He could ! 15 minutes later my MRTG was configured and now, we're all happy.

Yesterday, meeting with almost all the people of the company, to discuss about our "future". *cough*. If you want to recruit a Sysadmin, in Rennes, i'm your man.

sh has announced his (Debian) ITP for a few softwares, including the Bobot++ from eb. But since eb isn't working on it anymore, I'm preparing myself mentally to take over his work. I already have a CVS which contains a version with add-ons. Hum ... sourceforge is waiting for me, i can feel it ! :-)

4 brand new G4 have been received at work today. They're sweet. The mouse is now usable for normally constitued human beings. But (localized) MacOS sux. Deeply.

This week-end, Recovery.

We all have to start someday, so this is my first entry in my brand new diary here. I have written only a few words, and i already feel that my written english is _really_ rusty. Well, in fact, my oral english might be worse *g*.

It's 3am, here, and i left work 2 hours ago. Had to be there, "just in case", while people where moving some of our core routers 300 km from here. Finally, 3 got burnt (talking about routers, not people). Or at least, they lost their configuration. *wee*, happyness and everything. I just had to let my colleague do the work. Hey, i'm a Sysadmin, not a Netadmin !

Nothing really interesting today, apart from that. Played with MRTG and won. Bought feet for my guitar, and cables to link the effect switch and the Marshall, while still having enough cables to use the Wahwah and the guitar. Bought a Nightwish CD (i won't play it a lot) and a LA Guns live CD (it rocks ! I guess i'm old-fashioned), and « L'éveil d'Endymion » (from Dan Simmons, but i don't know the original title).

Enough for today !

New Advogato Features

New HTML Parser: The long-awaited libxml2 based HTML parser code is live. It needs further work but already handles most markup better than the original parser.

Keep up with the latest Advogato features by reading the Advogato status blog.
