Started working on the website for CVSPermissions. I am hoping it will serve me two purposes. One I learn DocBook website DTD and how to create websites and secondly all my users will have a proper website.

Work

Off to work on a saturday. There is an insiduous bug in the system that will affect the launch. We have even asked help from the application server vendor and they will be providing it soon. For a strange reason a transaction gets rolled back when there are no errors happening anywhere. The application server is ATG Dynamo. Not sure what the issue is, The whole team is debugging and I am here to provide a moral support more than anything else. Their ATG skills are far ahead of mine.

Today I tried to give the Advogato Poster the ability to talk via firewalls. Unfortunately it just didnt work. For some reason - not sure whether it is our corporate firewall or Java or XMLRPC, I always got the following error.

Exception in thread "main" java.io.IOException: Server returned HTTP response code: 407 for URL: http://www.advogato.org/XMLRPC
        at org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcClient$Worker.execute(XmlRpcClient.java:444)
        at org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcClient.execute(XmlRpcClient.java:163)
        at com.magic_cauldron.blogs.AdvogatoPoster.getLastDiaryEntry(AdvogatoPoster.java:292)
        at com.magic_cauldron.blogs.AdvogatoPoster.main(AdvogatoPoster.java:339)

Yes I have set the proxyHost and proxyPort properties, I have setup the proxyUser and password properties I have tried the Base64 encoding... nothing seems to work! I am tired of dealing with poorly written software today.

Gotta work on CVSPermissions... gotta work on CVSPermissions... I keep saying this to myself but never get around to doing it. I guess there is no real impetous for doing it. I need to sit down and apply myself.

Work Got home this morning at 4:00 Am after the conference call. One looooong day it has been. Have to get to work in the afternoon since we are live and there could be issues there. Things seem to be OK so far.

Life Will have to catch up on sleep. Getting to be a luxury nowadays. :-). My wife bought me a new pair of running shoes :-) can't wait to get my hands on them. she is sending it to me through a friend of hers.

Work

Oh boy! I have a conference call today from 11:30 PM IST to 2:00 AM IST. Fun fun fun.. It so worked out that the presentation that we had to do for our proposal was at that time. I am not sure when I will get home.

I guess after this then we just have to wait for the results from the customer.

Life

Been feeling bored about things in general. No new challenges lately. Thinking of writing something. Dont know what :-) I think my wife understands what I am talking about. I am not sure if I have to start a separate Blog. I am not the blogging type I think. I have not been able to put coherent words in Advogato in general so I dont see myself as a great blogger. The concepts is very intriguing though and very interesting. I might actually start one to satisfy the curiousity but I suspect sustaining the effort will be beyond me.

On the whole a more productive weekend for my Open source code. Managed to get out a new version of the poster, started to learn about DocBook Website building capabilities so I can put together a new homepage for CVSPermissions on Sarovar. Cannot complain/ask for more.

Work

So we are officially live from Monday. Things are looking good so far and working as we envisaged.

AdvogatoPoster: Took the timezone issue up after a long time. Why? Simply because I think Java TimeZone handling is just broken. I just could not figure out how to do conversion from one timezone to another. This is important to me since I live in a timezone very far away from advogato :-). Finally I had given up a long time ago. I had received a pointer to an article. That just didn't work. Today was "the" day that I decided to tackle the problem and google was my friend. I found this message in the google groups where someone else apparently had the same frustration and figured out the solution. So I just plugged in the code and viola! it worked. I am hoping this entry will appear correctly in Advogato.

Life

My friend krishna leaves town today back to his home in Singapore. Spent the whole day with his family.

Work

We are going live monday! Its is a busy time and a great time. I hope I can talk about it after it finally goes live :-)

The proposal that I worked upon is now been selected woohoo.. that means we make a presentation to the customer. That is scheduled wednesday. Good! the loss of two weekends is compensated by this victory of reaching the next step. This is a tough deal... hope we win it.

Work

OK, Today is the D-day to submit the big proposal. Have been working with all on various alternatives and what is right and wrong. Everybody has different ideas and I am spending more time co-ordinating each one with another than implementing ideas themselves.

I think I need to spend some time and finish my hosting of cvspermissions on sarovar. I have been putting it off for too long. I have to create a nice home page for it.

Life

Met an old friend after a long time. Should plan on meeting him again this week before he goes back to singapore. Too bad I could never spend time with him. I should probably take a day off and do it. Wednesday is the day I think...

Life

Last week a friend of mine died of a heart attack. He was a friend from high school. I felt absolutely shocked. I always went around with that feeling of invulnerability about myself and I guess my friends in the same age group. This came as a shock - kept thinking that it could be anyone among us. I guess we have reached that point where it is only downhill from here on :-(. Another highschool frined and myself went to see his mother and she was in tears. She just could not accept the fact. He was 32. Such a sad day.

Work

Been working all through the weekend. No breaks! Its been a tough thing to complete the work. I am hoping that it tapers down next week.

Open Source

I need to spend some time and work on adding some enhancements to CVSPermissions. I have put down all the requirements sent by one and all as feature requests. Now I just have to implement them :-)

Sarovar is working fine. I managed to copy a temporary "coming soon" page on the cvspermissions website. Raj is very helpful there.

ISP

My new cable connection is sorta OK. I dont get speeds > 28.8 K modem equivalent (this is supposed to be 64K :-( ) but the always on helps. So I dont have to run up huge phone bills.

Open Source

The Sarovar.org website is not working fine. Yay! I can actually host the source code in CVS on the server. Now the interesting part is how to make my public key, SSH and WinCVS working with each other - hmm... will keep reporting progress here if anyone is interested.

OK, I am back after a short haitus. Why the gap? just lazy I guess. DIdnt have much to write - actually that is not true. Here are events not in a chronological order

Technology

Got myself a cable modem connection in India. Nowhere close to what I have seen in the wonderful internet world of US of A. Atleast will keep my phone bills down. Cant seem to use it to talk to my wife though :-(

Open Source

India has a new opensource collaboration site similar to sourceforge. Take a look at sarovar Seems quite mature and wonderful. I plan to host my CVSPermissions tool over there. Possibly even the poster but I am not sure if anybody would be interested in such a small app :-)

They guys at the site are also very responsive and helpful. Hopefully they dont go under

Work

Life is a little relaxed nowadays. Work is OK, we are going live for sure so that is out of the way. NOthing new coming up which is a little sad.
