Orkut is in Alexa’s Top 10 sites…wtf?

Google’s social networking site Orkut was the coolest thing since sliced bread back in early 2004. It was a social network that actually had interesting people on it. It had a fun user interface. And then, the reliability problems kicked in, and then the Brazilians invaded every corner of it. So [...]

Wikimania

I’m off to Boston, to be among fellow nerds at Wikimania, where I’m hosting a discussion about enterprise use of MediaWiki, as well as hanging around beforehand for Hacking Days. We’ll see what sort of attendance there is for my session; there’s a lot of parallel tracks at this thing. I’m hoping to [...]

Apple’s $150 IQ test

I’m not an Apple fanboy by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have to hand it to them with the new laptops.  Not points on quality, but on revenue maximizing genius.  Specifically, charging $150 more for a black laptop.  People will pay for the cachet, and charging $150 is just enough to make [...]

Mobiguous company names

A friend recently told me about yet another mobile startup who I won’t name, but suffice to say has yet another one of those generic amalgams of “Mo” or “Mob” with some other word. It got me thinking “hey, I can automate this; maybe save everyone some time”….which I did (at least the first [...]

Went to OSCON last week. Got sick. Not sure if the two were related. ;-)

Actually, things went really well. Based on discussions there, I'm messing around with our SMIL implementation to come up with a good export format for OpenOffice Impress.

I spent the better part of today analyzing the last Debian project leader results. Very interesting. Martin Michlmayr won a Condorcet-tallied election in a very close race between him, Bdale Garbee (the incumbent), and Branden Robinson. Looking at the analysis, probably the most surprising observation is that Branden Robinson would have won had San Francisco's rules for Instant Runoff Voting been used. The full details are over on my posting on Electorama.

I'm at the IETF meeting in Japan this week. Other than the typhoon, it's going well. Unfortunately, I have to leave early. Those that are interested in what's going on can actually watch the MPEG-4 feeds.

Hmmmm....I'm curious why so many people are posting diary entries as articles.....

Been playing around with RSS stuff today. After much searching for a CSS stylesheet for RSS, found the W3C RSS Stylesheet which makes the W3C RSS Feed look pretty good in Mozilla. I borrowed it for the rtsp.org RSS feed. Also, suggested that the Mailman developers add RSS support to Mailman

Just posted an article about campaign finance reform to Kuro5hin. My contention is that it's a big ol' red herring, and that we really need to get rid of the two party system.

At any rate, we'll see what others think...
