Spent the day in a futile effort to determine if gcc 3.0 and most interestingly gjc were actually functional. Turns out after many hours of upgrading things like autoconf, automake, libtool, gnu make and gcc that gcc 3.0 has many issues remaining with C++ compilation. A good baseline test is attempting to use the latest version of GNU readline with g++, it dosn't even compile the headers correctly. The bug seems to be that when you typedef a function prototype with g++ it adds a throw () to the end of the typedef prototype, now when the prototype is actually used it says that the exception declaration is different. I'll hope this bug goes away so that then I can actually get real work done with this version of the compiler.

Besides the whole gcc/gcj fiaso. Finished the guile bindings in the still yet to be released database library. Now there are bindings for perl, php, tcl, guile and a start of a CNI java one. Without a working gcj I don't think I'll get very far on the java one, maybe I'll look at using the real JNI from Sun JDK. Had an idea of what to add to the database library to make it even more amazing, that will wait for tommorrow.

The sickness index has been at a slightly elevated level since Saturday. I'm not sure why, its either I'm really getting sick or my allergies. I think its more of the latter then the former as I still feel like going outside and running. Today I'll go really light on the jogging.

Not much canvas hacking as my time has been taken up by other projects. I'm not sure exactly when I'll get back to it.

Finished Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. A good book indeed. The book was particularly interesting since the book traveled through a number of places that I know. Bozeman especially since that were I live and go to the same university that was talked about, I've been driving through Idaho, and spent some time Medford and Grants Pass, Oregon. Followed by a brief attempt to reach Crescent City, California but ran out of time.

One of my favorite parts was the passage where they arrived at the West coast. They explained the similarities between the lifestyles on the West Coast and the East coast as both being in a form of funeral procession. I agree. This point was minor in the general scope of the book. There are many other great sections but to enumerate them would be pointless since I could not give them their proper justice.

Got up early, hacked on documentation cleanups. Making the conversion from DocBook to pdf look good.

At about 2pm when I decided I needed to send an email with some importance all of the dialup connectivity to work I had started acting up and refused to send the mail. Worked until about 10pm, until I got a new dialup setup working that isn't as bad as the last one. But, the story of how it works is another story entirely.

Working on a database library that will be released under LGPL soon. Pretty much have the C implementation down except for some remaining features such as query timing, MS SQL Compute result sets, and result column bindings. After then its on to language bindings, I've started on TCL, Guile, Perl and PHP4.

Besides that just working on a few other things.
