Death Penalty for whistleblowers

Friends,

This one is really egregious. It looks like the our government is classifying whistleblowing as "Communicating With the Enemy" -- since (just like the rest of us) "the enemy" can access releases by whistleblowers once they've been made public. It's an offense that carries the death penalty.

Click here to tell Obama and Defense Secretary Panetta to reverse this outrageous legal interpretation -- No death penalty for whistleblowers!

http://act.demandprogress.org/letter/whistleblower_death_penalty/?referring_a...

Here's Glenn Greenwald with more details (emphasis added):

A US air force systems analyst who expressed support for WikiLeaks and accused leaker Bradley Manning triggered a formal military investigation last year to determine whether she herself had leaked any documents to the group....

The investigation was ultimately closed when they could find no evidence of unauthorized leaking, but what makes these documents noteworthy is the possible crime cited by military officials as the one they were investigating: namely, "Communicating With the Enemy", under Article 104 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

He continues:

It seems clear that the US military now deems any leaks of classified information to constitute the capital offense of "aiding the enemy" or "communicating with the enemy" even if no information is passed directly to the "enemy" and there is no intent to aid or communicate with them.

Merely informing the public about classified government activities now constitutes this capital crime because it "indirectly" informs the enemy.

Just click here to email Obama, Panetta, and your lawmakers: No death penalty for whistleblowers!

Voting machines tied to the Romneys could decide the election in Ohio

Dear Friend,

If this year's presidential election comes down to the electoral votes
in Ohio, the deciding votes could be cast on electronic voting
machines manufactured by a company - Hart Intercivic - with deep
financial ties to the Romney family.

Hart Intercivic is majority owned by H.I.G. Capital which controls two
of the five seats on the Hart Intercivic board. An investment fund
with deep ties to the Romney family and the Mitt Romney for president
campaign, H.I.G. Capital was founded by Tony Tamer, a major bundler
for the Romney campaign, and it is one of the largest partners of
Solamere Capital, an investment fund founded by Tagg Romney and
Spencer Zwick, Mitt Romney's chief fundraiser from the 2008
presidential campaign. This makes the Romney family part owner of the
voting machine company, through it's interest in H.I.G. Capital.

A 2007 study conducted by Ohio's Secretary of State showed that Hart
Intercivic's touch screen voting machines could be easily corrupted.

I just signed a petition telling the Department of Justice to not let
Republicans steal the election in Ohio with Romney-owned voting
machines. Click on the link below to find out more and sign the
petition.

Show solidarity with striking #workers at #Walmart - #p2 #strike #opwalmart

It's Friday.

Dear Friend,

Walmart Stores Inc. - notorious for years for trampling the basic
rights of American workers - has become the focus of a historic strike
by its store workers.

In an unprecedented move, recently Walmart workers went on strike
across the country, informing Walmart management that the strikes will
spread throughout November if Walmart doesn't listen to their demands.

While Rob Walton - Walmart's chairman of the board - raked in at least
$420 million in Walmart dividends alone last year, low pay and
arbitrary scheduling force many of Walmart's workers to rely on public
assistance to make ends meet.

I just signed a petition to show solidarity with the Walmart workers
who are standing up to Walton, and rest of Walmart's management for a
safe workplace and a decent standard of living. Click below for more
information and join to the cause.

Tell the Maryland General Assembly: Ban fracking now

Dear Friend,

Fracking is headed to Maryland. The only way to stop it is to ban it.

Maryland has a de facto moratorium on fracking, but it could be lifted
anytime. Meanwhile, the industry is signing gas leases and state
regulators are reviewing permit applications. Maryland won't be safe
until it has a permanent ban on this toxic practice.

Tell the Maryland General Assembly: Ban fracking now. Click the link
below to view the petition.

Tell Darden to treat its workers with basic human dignity

Dear Friend,

Darden Restaurant Group, which owns Olive Garden, Red Lobster,
LongHorn Steakhouse and countless other chain restaurants, has about
180,000 employees working at its nearly 2,000 restaurants nationwide

And while the company's CEO makes $8.5 million each year, many of the
company's employees are paid just $2.13 per hour, forcing them to live
on the tips you voluntarily pay them at the end of your meal.

Workers cannot sustain a safe, decent standard of living in our
communities at $2.13 per hour. We stand up against this economic
injustice today.

I just signed a petition telling Darden to stop exploiting its workers
and pay tipped employees at least $5 per hour. Click on the link below
to find out more and sign the petition.

Help Defuse Utah's Tar-sands Carbon Bomb

Governor Gary Herbert wants to turn some Utah's most spectacular wildlands into an Alberta-style tar-sands disaster, and we need your help to stop him.

More than 140,000 acres in eastern Utah are already open to tar-sands strip mining, and regulators have permitted mining on nearly 6,000 acres; only an uphill court battle stands in the way of mining on the first of those lands.

Tar-sands mining would decimate wildlands, destroy sage grouse habitat and deplete and pollute Colorado River water desperately needed by endangered fish and millions of people. Once mining begins, it could catalyze a wildly inefficient cycle of energy and water use -- igniting a carbon bomb that will further dry the Colorado River, melt the Arctic and acidify our oceans.

Please take a moment to urge Gov. Herbert to abandon his disastrous tar-sands mining plans.
