Just returned from Access 2000 in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. As well as being an excellent conference with a wide range of presentations on all aspects of libraries, it gave me the chance to meet with various people I had been corresponding with for months. Being able to get together with Dan Chudnov in person to plan the future of the jake project was invaluable. I've come away with some new focus for jake and many ideas about new projects I'd like to contribute to. I'd like to draw attention to Herbet Van de Sompel's presentation on the SFX linking framework. He's a captivating speaker and has done wonderful work in setting up standards for library system linking. Although we already have a linking system which does much of what SFX does - GODOT at SFU - it is pretty messy. An OpenSFX project seems inevitable, hopefully I'll get to be a part of it either in planning or development. After a great dinner with Dan and a number of library workers from reference to administration, I think it's very likely a Docster project will be started in the next few months...
