I've posted my CodeCon 2003 review. Read it at http://www.mackinney.net/paul/codecon.html. It took me a while to get to it because of midterms, etc. Really a lot of fun.

And when I got back from the conference and logged onto Advogato, I'd made it from Observer to Apprentice. I can post articles! Either the system is working, or something's gone dreadfully wrong.

Well he did it. I heard him do it. The leader of the free world, the man who controls the nuclear arsenal of the United States of America, said "nucular" during his State of the Union speech. Kind of gives you confidence that the system is working, eh?

Had to quit reading Ben Bova's book, 'The Precipice' (c) 2001 at page 42. Not a picky reader, I consume mass quantities of science fiction and mysteries to compensate for not watching any broadcast TV. Here's the offending passage:

"What about your cook?"

With a laugh, Dan said, "She goes with the van, old buddy. She only speaks Japanese, but she's terrific in the kitchen. And the bedroom."

Frieberg flushed deep red. But he did not refuse Dan's gift.

I've read plenty of books that were racist and sexist. I've enjoyed them. Some of them (Ivanhoe, Tarzan) had the (thin) excuse that their authors were working within the prevailing mores of their lifetime. Others lacked even that excuse (Casino Royale et al).

So why am I so heated about the admittedly tame passage quoted above? The problem is that Bova actually has a decent scientific idea (the greenhouse effect is accelerating catastrophically) but he throws in this offensive crap that has nothing to do with the plot. It's like he thinks he has to bribe me to read his book (time out while we all fantasize about giesha.) Spare me, pal!

OK, my first python script is done.

Given a name, it creates a directory if none exists and puts a pickled state file (currently just a counter) in the directory.

Well I seem to be lurching toward a thesis topic. Should be fun, I'm looking at developing an improved archiver for Mailman, specifically one that supports searching.

Current to do list:

- Develop my a simplistic archiving tool to get my feet wet w/Python.

- Research how pipermail tracks threads, report to Ellen.

- Research current archiving method from message reception to storage. Starting point=ArchRunner.py
