Life

Just filed the application for transfer to Civil Service. I'll end up serving 4 months extra duty for that, 16 months in total.

In Norway, where I currently live, there is conscription, as there is in half the nations of the world. It is demanded that you make yourself available for the military machinery of the state for 12 months and are willing to take the lives of others and jeopardize your own.

Update: 2 months extra for doing Civil Service, 14 months in total.

In Tim O'Reilly's response to Jim Allchin's comments on "open source" software development, he links to Ontario Swine Improvement Inc.:

I was disappointed, because Allchin's comments ignored all of the reasoning behind the widespread change from the term "free software" to the term "open source." (While there is a lot of overlap between the ideals of the free software movement and the open source movement, the two are not identical.)

I'm amused that O'Reilly makes open source look like swine.

Exciting day with many interesting talks by free software ûberhackers at OSDEM (denoted FSDEM by rms).

If you get the chance to hear people like rms, wichert or Jeremy Allison sometime, I deeply recommend to attend their talks.

Returned to Oslo from Brussels tonight.
