Older blog entries for mtearle (starting at number 7)

libical - Alice is going out to lunch with me! Alice is the automated testbot. (Note: must get life) Fixed a bug in read-imip.pl and submitted a patch. Must work on python wrapper at some point, have been programming much too much Perl lately that I am actually starting to be proficient at it again, this scares me.

mixmagic - downloaded the .debs for 0.1.0. It's very funky when it's not segfaulting, I've been looking for something like this for ages.

on advogato and advo-suicide - I noticed the comments recently about lilo's disapperance, I don't think when someone disappears their diarys as a consequence should disappear into the vapour as well. Maybe a dead/zombie certification?

ObSFCon - Went to swancon, the local SF con for Western Australia. Fen are just weird and got a awful sense of deja vu for no apparent reason. "Bimbos of the Death Sun" is distirbingly accurate.

on diarywatcher - Spoke to yakk at the con, he knows it's been misbehaving slightly

libical - exposing more bugs :)

mirrorball - it's back up on the roof again and Nick and I didn't fall off the ladder putting it up there

on backpain - do not attempt to move heavy computers with only five people down several flights of stairs. Oh well, at least, Simon will get to enjoy having a Star 910/VP sparc clone in his loungeroom.

on descriptions - I was advogato description surfing, found jennv's description (hi there!), and realised there no way of telling when people have updated their descriptions on advogato (I can feel feature creep coming on here)

on toys - played with Zope, downloaded Xen - looks worthwhile, have to play with it more.

libical - Created my first object using the C interface today, I'm so proud :) I think I picked up a couple of issues in the example code too, I'll have to wait to hear from Eric.

on slashdot - slashdot seems to be going downhill which is sad given that it is one of the few daily sites that I read. I'm reading in depth only the occasional article nowadays. The 14 floor tetris however was cool.

on time - there should be more of it

Work - It's been a headless chicken week. Trying to do everthing else and write documentation and specifications at the same time is not very successful.

libical - Downloaded the latest copy, it's certainly advanced since the last time I looked at it. Read the related RFC's 2445 to 2447, it's starting to all make sense. Those conversations on ietf-calendar are no longer so cryptic. I've also started tracking the evolution mailing list, need to find out who is the calendar person on there

advogato - I'm a mailing list junkie, I need my advogato diary's on a mailing list :)

on workspaces - flourescent lights evil, internet connected coke machines good, internet connected mirrorballs bizzarre, fast desktop machines a bonus and save much programmer aggravation, a test lab with machines you can trash

singing - the concert went well, now we are singing a sexy Russian piece called "Alexander Nevsky"

Work - Yay, I got mod_dav to compile and work after much mental dyslexia. axps != apxs. Now I just need to work out what we actually want to do with the thing

Study- Have been doing my electronic tutorials for my algorithms unit, both now done for the fortnight. I suspect Yakk who is also in my class has been studying after his rant in his diary about PFS and the trust metric

On the trust metric- Advogato has a web of certification but it's hard to see what communities people fit into. You can see what project they are attached to/developing but it doesn't give a indication of what their social community is like. I know Yakk, gbowland, k and others through the local computer club here. There doesn't seem to be a way to indicate this.

Cookie Problems - Login only shows a very minimalist screen on one machine but seems to work quite well elsewhere. I'll try to investigate further later.

Off to Sing - I'm off to do "Front of House" with PUCS (local Uni choir) tonight ... should be fun.

WebDAV - Need to reimplement internal documentation storage thing at work. WebDAV looks like the right way (tm). Found a cool tool called WebRFM which does what I want in terms of functionality. Need to play with it more on Friday. Thanks to Yakk for ranting about it to me earlier.

libical- I lurk on the ietf-calendar mailing list. Eric Busboom seems to be making progress on libical (a library to do calendar type things). It's on my list of things to investigate further again when I get some free time(tm)

People - My friend Shig is back from Sydney. I've missed him and his dry sense of humour. I must visit him later in the year.

Geeks and Sex - SO's are nice things to have, I find I code much better when I have one. Unfortunately, I misplaced mine earlier in the year. Must get a replacement.

Woo Hoo! My first diary entry.

Mail Readers

I was using Eudora yesterday, noticed that message listing was kind of elegant. Pity about the rest of it :)

For my personal mail, I use a rather hacked/configured version of pine (vi for text editing, magic little program to record urls that I see in emails, multiple mailboxes for the the various mailing lists, etc). I only wish it had threading.

PHP

I'm a freshmeat fan and it's rare that there is a day without a posting about a little PHP app. Some of them are getting quite useful ... like phpSched

Ob-Work

One should not run a ~150 MB database on P100 with very little ram and a crappy IDE hard disk.

New Advogato Features

New HTML Parser: The long-awaited libxml2 based HTML parser code is live. It needs further work but already handles most markup better than the original parser.

Keep up with the latest Advogato features by reading the Advogato status blog.

If you're a C programmer with some spare time, take a look at the mod_virgule project page and help us with one of the tasks on the ToDo list!
