As every year we have got a new Linux Convention in our country. Also people in charge did a nice image, banner04
so if you are Chile or you will be, join us. This will be a great "show", next year is our time because we will be in charge!

Sadly my webapp's development is almost stopped because I haven't got much more money to spend on it and that's mean no time, because I'm not a full time webtranslator developer and I've got to share my time with my pillow. So, currently I'm looking for a sponsor to improve lots of new features that will help to the open source community.

If you want to know more about this project you can go to our pgfoundry page or send me a direct mail to gonzalemario at gmail dot com if you please.

As usual in Latin America an InstallFest is celebrated, this festival is called FLISOL and this will be the April 28th. We, as UdeC linux user group, are going to support this with another educational institute from our city.

I hope and I know this will be a great installfest and also, we're getting more experience for the Linux Convention 2008

Currently I'm working in a university called "Universidad de Concepcion) and we've got a linux user group. But last weeks have been a little bothering, some new people did a proposal and not the all group are agree, including myself. So, we've got to decide what we're going to do, because we are in charge in Chile of the Linux Convention 2008 (Encuentro Linux). Yeah! almost 2 year more however, it's necessary gain training in those years before the big one.

Why every day lots of mail arrive from users in mailing lists trying to go out from a list? well they could have this own reasons and I think that's ok however why they send mails in the body with "unsuscribe", "unsubcribe", "unsusbcribe" and others? There is one way to unsusbcribe only and they cannot see or are they too lazy to read three or four lines?

Users, I'll never understand you :-)

Every year, Linux conventions are realized in my country (www.encuentrolinux.cl). Currently I was invited to talk about the apps I wrote for Postgres translations. Well, It's a pot frontend but I applied that to Postgres indeed. IMO the first step was made: we are able to translate strings online, see the results in real time, to have got many translator of the same file and people in charge for tralation's quality. The next step is create the HTML manual using openjade; for that I've been writing a lot of code and it's 90% completed. Also I really have to finish before tomorrow at 14:00. My presentation is at 15:00 :-)

Our webapp has got the first pre-release, the three main actors works well, but there are some things I have to check again. I've got a bug when 2 translators send the same string and a person (a string checker?) give a score to each one of them, so there is a design problem I think and today I'm going to see what is going on.

Long time without write here, I've been very bussy but now I've got good news. The proyect I have talking about was aproved in pgFoundry in that way we can keep all in order: all the code, the mail list and others useful resources in the same site. Personally, I'm very happy to help an OpenSource project like PostgreSQL, like I said time ago, even so I haven't got a full time work for this, I do the best I can. Many thanks to my friend alvherre for the help in this project.

After a hard work we've got all SGML documents in XML files, we know how POT works, I wrote a little status page l10n.postgresql.cl and we were thinking how can we manage this project well about. All was ok until... we had a deep think :) and in the last minute we decided NOT start to translate, not yet. So far I learned many things, some were goods and others are IMHO rather lacking in few useful activities. Ex:

There's a translator and he wants to work in a file. So the translator MUST download the entire PO. And what about if the file has 2000 translated lines and 4 lines are mising only?

I don't know if you can understand the idea or my English is too bad :)

At the end, we will start to build a webapp for translators, beta testers, project cordinators and whatever.... The most important is, we will do and great work (I think) improving some things. That's way lots of people will be able to read postgresql docuentation in the Spanish language. Sadly, I've got a full time work developing end-users pythonic SW and I cannot quit; I really would like to have got more time and use it in OpenSource projects like this :)

If you want to help us, please go to l10n.postgresql.cl and check the TODO file if you please.

Is been long time without drop any line here. Well, some weeks ago I started to see how can we translate Postgresql's documentation to spanish and now we are ready to begin. The first step was convert all SGML files to XML Docbook and find a way to generate HTML pages. (Done with openjade help) We're using PO files thanks to xml2po from gnome-doc-utils package.

Next steps:

  • create a mail list and find a hosting service for the translated documentation.
  • send emails to pgsql-es-ayuda@postgresql.org and others to find a bit of help cause I've got a lot of work to do and I cannot do it alone.

    New Advogato Features

New HTML Parser: The long-awaited libxml2 based HTML parser code is live. It needs further work but already handles most markup better than the original parser.

Keep up with the latest Advogato features by reading the Advogato status blog.
