Things I never expected to hear a politician say

The Guardian interviews Alistair Darling, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (==finance minister) of the UK:

"Now Alistair," [his press adviser] tells him firmly when eventually we sit down for the interview, "tell her everything. Make sure you tell her everything."

"The economic times we are facing are arguably the worst they've been in sixty years. And I think it's going to be more profound and long-lasting than people thought... People are pissed off with us. We really have to make our minds up; are we ready to try and persuade this country to support us for another term?"
