Had a headache tonight. Because of that, I didnt went to
school and slept until 10h. Woke up, logged in, and tried
Andrea's "backport" of
balance_dirty() from 2.4 to 2.2.17pre6. I was right
yesterday when I said "maybe we still can make I/O a bit
faster". With Andrea's patch, I was able to get 21MB/sec
with dbench (48 processes) , against 17MB/sec of
2.2.16pre9. After lunch, ported this
<a
href="http://bazar.conectiva.com.br/~marcelo/patches/v2.2/2.2.17pre9/balance-dirty-andrea.patch">patch</a>
and sent to linux-kernel. Also I came up with a <a
href="http://bazar.conectiva.com.br/~marcelo/patches/v2.2/2.2.17pre9/wait-dirty.patch">solution</a>
(which does not affect performance) to the problem were a
process would wait on IO completion to free a buffer page
while there is freeable cache around, pointed by Andrea.

Upgraded my machine to Conectiva Linux 5.1 and XFree 4 to
the latest CVS stuff, now I have accents working on it.
(thanks to our local XFree hacker).
Tested a bit more 2.2.17pre8 VM, maybe we still can make I/O
a bit faster.
Spent some time on userbeans, file descriptor charging is
now working.
Also translated elvtune man page to portuguese.

More work on 2.2.15 kernel RPM. Released the first version
of it for CLS 5.1 Beta. Also almost finised 2.2.15 RPM
update for 4.2, 4.0, 5.0 (just a few bits of working to get
it done, tomorrow). VIA82cxxx sound card worked on 2.3,
tomorrow i hope to do the backport to 2.2. Unfortunately
3c90x driver from 3Com is borked wrt SMP according to Alan.

Usual school day. I've been working on the kernel RPM for
Conectiva Linux 5.1 this afternoon. Almost finished the
update 2.2.15 RPM for other distribution versions. Cleaned
the two HA machines and my two test machines _and_ my table.
Now with two 2-box clusters we can test HA stuff without
screaming "Hey, anyone using the machines?" all the time.
Added 512mb of memory to plucky (it had 64mb).
Unfortunately one 256mb chip was broken. Tomorrow 1 gig
should be arriving so Rik can test his VM stuff with
highmem.

&lt;diary lame&gt; The previous diary entry is for 9 April
2000
&lt;/diary lame&gt;
Woke up 6:10 with Rik making the sound explode with Jimi
Hendrix.
Went to school, everything proceeded as always there. In
the afternoon i found one SMP bug in drbd and now it seems
to be SMP safe. Applied the yesterday patch to drbd-CVS,
modified it a bit and sent both patches to Philipp. Started
to apply by hand my heartbeat per-link status patch against
heartbeat-CVS. I will finish this tomorrow, along with more
changes i have in mind.

Woke up 8:00, read email and found a bug in the drbd timeout
handlers. Around 13:00 walked with Rik to a churrascaria
near here. Damn sun. The meat paradise was completly busy,
though we dont had to way more than 5min. After meat and a
nbd-over swap talk with Rik we came back walking. Fucking
sun. Watched "Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii" video again, those
guys are good. Walked a bit throught the garden (its almost
a jungle) in the back of my house.
Fixed the bug i found in the morning, sent the patch to
Philipp, and slept.

Woke up 8:00, jumped into my father's car and slept there
until
9:30 when we arrived at my family's farm. Then i went to
the
farm house and slept until 12:00. Woke up again, ate a pile
of
(excellent) meat (churrasco) and helped some guys removing
rocks from a water fountain to do an artificial lake there
(this one
is going to be cool when ready). After that, me and Rik
started to
"climb" (40 degrees) a big mountain (for .br padrons). The
sun was a pain in the ass. After around 3 hours we returned
(almost dead) and i had the stupid idea of showing Rik raw
jungle. After around 200m throught it and 10 spider web's
in my face, we got stuck and had to return. Came back home,
wrote my diary and kissed the bed.
