Notes:

I'm rediscovering Advogato after some time away. I don't know exactly where to begin. I'm very much of a novice at software development. I haven't done any so far. On the other hand, I'm keen on all aspects of the Internet and have dabbled in all kinds of things. At present I use a Windows XP OS. As browsers go I like Firefox. I have several others on my machine, including Opera and a number of IE-based browsers such as the Avant, Maxthon and Greenbrowser browsers. The latter are all good browsers; they offer tabbed browsing and so on; and they work at high speed. Even so Firefox has the edge, perhaps especially because of the extensions and the bookmarklets that have been designed for it. I make active use of del.icio.us and I have a two-year account with Flickr. I also sometimes use Stumble!, Simpy and Raw Sugar. And Competitive Ranking is rather impressive. For e-mail I'm hooked on Gmail. And I use Skype, which works extremely well. Whereas I have had to abandon the Gizmo Project and Google Talk for the time being at least. They both seem to have plenty of teething problems. For graphic design I use Paint Shop Pro and for HTML (or other) editing Arachnophilia or Homesite. I've heard that the future of Homesite is not too bright, which is a pity since it does the job extremely well. Nick Bradbury's TopStyle Pro is excellent as a CSS application, and it is also an HTML application, too. I always use TopStyle as my CSS editor and I sometimes use TopStyle for that purpose. For RSS feeds I'm a fan of FeedDemon, another of Nick Bradbury's applications. It can download podcasts, too, though since we acquired an iPOD, I've left the podcasts to iTunes. I'm a blogger. I maintain blogs on Blogger (magictongue.blogspot.com) and Bubbler. I also have a Manila blog and, previously, I subscribed to Radio Userland, but I seem to have give that up. Same with Typepad and LiveJournal. The Bubbler type of blog, after some initial fumbling, is pretty easy to use. And it doesn't require you to have any knowledge of HTML at all. I'm keen on wikis and I am trying to keep several of them going. The simplest is a Pwyky written in a single Python file by Sean B. Palmer. In many ways the appearance resembles that of the Advogato site, and this makes me wonder whether the Advogato site is written in Python. Maybe it is. I recently joined Wikipedia and, eventually, I may start to become a contributor to that encyclopedia.

Thanks for your comments. I'll take a look at the META tags.

As for the javacript the explanation given by Bruce Lawson is that the target="_blank" attribute no longer works in XHTML Strict. I've written my page in XTML Strict.

The w3c has excluded this according to the (logical) reasoning that the coding is supposed to dictate what happens within the page, whereas opening a new window is considered to be outside the page. However, as explained, I have removed this javascript because with Firefox right-clicking on a link brings up a menu and one of the items on that menu allows the link to be opened in a new window. This makes the javascripting unnecessary at least for Firefox. I haven't quite understood how this bulletin board can be used to exchange messages with other members, by the way.

Going back

Today I went back on some of the things I did yesterday. In particular, I decided to remove completely the javascript that opens links in a new window. First of all, it works rather slowly. Secondly, and mainly, it is redundant, at least when using the Firefox browser. Instead, you can right click on a link. This displays a menu that allows the link to be opened in a new window or in a new tab. This seems to make the javascipt unnecessary, for Firefox at least. I haven't experimented with other browsers.

Updating my Web site

I've done some reformatting of my Web page at http://www.davidhogg.com/ today. I've tried to make the page more compact. I've reduced the width so that the number of characters to the line is about 78 maximum, as some typographers recommend. I've also grouped similar links on the same line, where possible. Also external links for the most part open in a new window. For this purpose I used a piece of javascript produced by Kevin Yank and adapted by Bruce Lawson. It works a bit slowly, but it does work.

New Advogato Features

New HTML Parser: The long-awaited libxml2 based HTML parser code is live. It needs further work but already handles most markup better than the original parser.

Keep up with the latest Advogato features by reading the Advogato status blog.
