On certification, Advogato could do with a
'Knows' level, between Observer and Apprentice (?).
For instance, I know bjf,
but I cannot rate his coding ability as I simply haven't
seen suitable samples. This is also relevant on time, ie,
should you rate on someone's ability many years ago (back
when he was a young thing asking the elders of Humbug obvious
questions), or what they are/could be doing now (well, for
one, the moment you stop agonising about relationships,
you'll find yourself in one).
You've also got differing ideas on ability. As an example,
my wizzbang electronic weather station paniced last night
warning of a large storm approaching. Local airport's
weather beacon didn't think it was worth mentioning, apart
from 'Low clouds, no significant change'. ( At a guess, the
MLC
beacon would have declared it to be red-flash, white).
Self-rating is also a two-edged thing of extreme sharpness.
You've got your own conceit (I am a Coding God!) vs humble
appraisal of your own abilities (I can't get past Hello World).
No easy answer there. Wonder how you'd rate someone behind
one of these
?
