Alrighty! Every IRIX Sysadmin's nightmares end, as NetBSD's Packages Collection is now also available for IRIX. Porting bootstrap-pkgsrc over wasn't even too much of a pain. Everybody enjoy - I certainly do!

Finally, it has happened: NetBSD-current now has SMP support! Frank van der Linden has merged Bill Sommerfeld's i386mp branch into i386/-current. i386 SMP support should work fine on 1-CPU systems and quite well on a lot of multiprocessor systems. NetBSD 1.6 has been released, with binary releases for 39 architectures. More information is available in the 1.6 release announcement.

Users are strongly encouraged to consider upgrading to 1.6, as we believe this to be the best release of NetBSD yet!

Many of the FTP Mirrors are now carrying the NetBSD 1.6 distribution. Please try to use the NetBSD FTP Mirror Site closest to you.

Czech, German, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish language translations of the NetBSD 1.6 release announcement are available.

With the publishing of the final ballot of the Board Elections on September 12th, a one-year long effort to establish a more democratic structure in the NetBSD Project came to a successful end. The Nomination Committee's slate for the new Board has been accepted by the Members of the NetBSD Project with an overwhelming majority. Out of the 124 valid votes cast, 122 approved the Nomination Committee's slate.

``IRIX Binary Compatibility'', the first paper of a series on IRIX binary compatibility on NetBSD by Emmanuel Dreyfus, has been published by ONLamp.com. The paper goes into the details of the implementation in the NetBSD kernel. As it explains how things are implemented, the paper documents various kernel susbsystems and reverse engineering techniques.
