Finished playing with the Python embedded config for the Wall and added some fancy stuff to it; like:

  wall.content.redirect
("http://","sex|drugs|rockandroll",80,rules.in,dest)

a redirector based on content for HTTP and FTP. Quite nice, though I realize this could be used for censorware. Slows the Wall down a lot, tho.

I am going to bed early these days and back up around 6am. I don't know why, but I feel better that way. Jill's been extra sweet lately - wonder if it has something to do with the fact that she's dragging me down to see her family over christmas, which basically means: no cussing, no saying that I am not a christian, no being anti-prejudice, no pro- guncontrol statements, etc.

I guess I won the first round of screaming matches, or better: ESR won them for me. Gave his Cathedral/Bazaaar to our controller guys and they seem impressed. We'll see.

Coding: Spent the past days having screaming matches with other Suits on questions like "Why opensource our product line?" and "if I am contra-OSS, why do you call me a moron?". Went back home and started coding a small application to run all known IIS exploits on one single server or a subnet. Worked well, in fact it worked so well, I had to call in and have someone reset our IIS box :).

Tough Luck: With the T1 going down and stuff, the kids who "0wned" my honeypot are now gone. Just as I wanted to release all the files, keystroke logs and stuff, someone else did it - and got the novelty bonus from the media and FBI. Well, guess I'll just turn the data in with the Feds and see what they wanna do about it.

Zope: rocks. Just got some mail from a guy in Sweden who wrote a small DTML method to remote-control his house based on my x10_product. Fascinating how fast crappy software spreads sometimes - and how geniusses like him can turn it into something useful :)

The world is good again ... I guess. My T1 is back up and I am live and kicking on the 'net as soon as the DNS updates are through.

Sorry to have to object :). Suppose you'd want to use a Wiki as some kind of "Global Brain" and carry information that is not necessarily pleasant to everyone mentioned. Of course the argument that true information will always reoccur and survive while lies will die out, is a valid one, but still in some scenario this might evolve into an arms race between deletition and repost-bots (just think Usenet) and the fact that it hasn't happened yet is no proff that it won't some day.
From Usenet I've learned that the "save than sorry"-doctrine is not necessarily wrong. In an ideal scenario a Wiki would allow for core information to be protected but the surrounding data being editeable for everyone, IMHO.

The new week starts promising. First of all I finally got my office. As space is scarce around here and we're growing exponentially every month I thought I'd never get one - but there must be benefits of being a Suit.

Darryll delivered the latest Beta-Code for the Firewall stuff tonight and I just had this fragged up idea of making the firewall processes Python scripteable. So I dug out Pythons pythonembed-docu and started playing. As a result the forwarding code is broken again but I can script logging and log actions in Python now as well as define non- static rules and failover with them.

Ran the same tests I ran last month again. PIX and Sonicwall again bet the living crap out of my code, even though I removed expensive logging for speeds sake. 120 Megs per second are the maximum the IDS can handle and the Firewall module starts dropping at 340M/s. I need to work on this, sigh.

Hard week is over. Especially the Feds cracked me up all the week, they definitely have a clue about security and incident analysis now, but they're soooo buzword prone. Well, came back home and moved preacher, my new machine, under the stairs just to find out that PacBelkl has fucked up again and the T1 is down.

Zope.Org has accepted my first few patches, I'm kinda proud :)

Got myself an Epson Stylus 2500 pro Color Printer/Scanner/Copier. Nice machine and works perfectly with FreeBSDs uprinter and uscanner devices - unfortunately most of the high level functions are not accesible yet - maybe I should start diving into the depths of USB protocols and write something myself.

Long time no write :). Finally all my INS paperwork is thru' and I got new glasses. We also moved in a new house without real internet access (I got a Ricochet modem but it seems to have serious issues with FreeBSD even though I heard a lot of people talk about using it with theit 5.0- CURRENT boxen.

Workwise a lot has changed also, but that is a completely different story, it should be sufficient to point out my title above has changed a bit and development has moved over to more embedded stuff.

SiteFoundation suffered big time over the past weeks and, honestly, I am not sure if I'll pick it back up again. I moved most of my websites over to a Zope/ZServer-Server and am currently obsessed with ZClasses (that will wear off, I know that much :).

Woke up with a friggin headache and my back hurting like shit. Sat down to work on foundation and decided to not do anything but watch all 6 DVDs od SPAWN instead. McFarlane rocks.

They got all the paperwork now, let's wait and see what will happen next. Two possible scenarios: I get a real work permit or they throw me outta the country for good, the latter possibility not really improving my mood, though.

Coding

Demanding Bastards at work :). Just delivered over 1000 Lines of code to fix some minor problems and they want me to friggin document that shit. Told 'em where to shove it and continued watching SPAWN.

Usenet

Five more days left as Spokesman of the german hierarchy de.ALL. Guess it was a good time but, well, Usenet almost went the way Linux or Gothic Bars did, too much morons, too less understanding of the basics and the technology under the hood, no longer my world.

Bought some books I'm gonna read in the next few weeks to keep me entertained, mostly OS design and filesystem design which hopefully will make me a better human after reading and understanding it :)
