I partially looked the sources of sysvinit. it's more complicated that i could imagine. consequently, i think i will implement my own mini-init to manage Parallel launches and Fire&forget launches in each runlevel. I think i can be fun and that i will learn nice things by doing that.
AFAIK, System V's init runs sequetially from 00foo to 99bar in each runlevel (1,2,3,4,5,6 in linux). And it is long. I wonder if it could be (yes it could) possible to extend init to handle 2 more types of daemons : xxFFbar (fire and forget) and xxPPfoo (Parallel in sequence xx). thus on SMP, unices could start faster by making such a fork.. I'm going to look init's sources next Week-End.. See you later.
My laptop works now with ubuntu hoary. Believe me, Ubuntu is easier to install, to configure (network interfaces, etc..) and to use than Windows XP. e.g: i am currently doing a drag'n'drop between a windows shared folder to an ftp server with nautilus, without to have to configure samba or whatever software. Doing thee equivalent with windlws means : downlad/install winscp3 and leechftp then connect to the ftpserver and then drag the files.. but .. hey ! it crashes under windows WP ! Really, windowsers, try Ubuntu, and see. You'll never get back !
Ah ! at last i received my new laptop ! my previous was half-dead since it had no keyboard (i had to plug a regular keyboard) and had 3 minutes of battery... Well, yet another install party began this morning. I tested Mandriva Discovery (given with the laptop) and debian Ubuntu. That's really cool : people in the distros world have made good efforts to make installation process smarter and easier than Microsoft's OS installation. My new laptop is a HP/compaq nx9105 with eth10/100, wlan 802-11g, and a 56k modem; plus irDa, and USB etc.. etc... but no more floppy. Everything works under linux 2.6.8 with options 'nolapic' and 'noapic' given to the kernel. I had to install ndiswrapper to support my wifi chip, then the nvidia 2D/3D accellerator drivers for my videocard. Gnome 2.8 (given in ubuntu) is really impressive and sober. Good work linuxmen !

Here is a little text that describe the power of graphs to help managing content, such as sounds, or words (graphs of synonyms) or everything you want. I'm a heavy user of the WindowMaker wm, and i like it because it is the only wm that handles X classes instead of application window. But since yesterday, i installed KDE 3.2 and began to... like it! Hey, KDE begins to be a good UI : DnD works correctly, Contextual menus are smart, and well.. everything is easier than Windo$ XP ! That's all folks..
