Here is my rant for the day: compile time options are bugs. There is no compile time option that shouldn't be converted to a run-time option, with the possible exception of a few kernel features -- and I'm not too sure about those either. This issue has an important bearing on the debate between the Redhat and Debian package management systems, but exactly what it was escapes me at the moment. Suffice it to say that I can't see living with a system that doesn't allow multiple versions of the same package to co-exist.
