it's good to see that moore's law is scheduled to continue for a while, though mr. grove seems concerned that there might be an end to it... are there any theoretical limits anymore? theoretically speaking, of course!

See this link for more info: the ny times (there's a log-in required but it's free and they don't bug you!)

i have spent the day doing lpi stuff again. last night i think i finally finished making all of the necessary changes to cvs and got the html update script running again.

i said it on irc today:

"rotflmfao... jewelsthorn running linux... yeah right... pigs fly... there is a tooth fairy... and the easter bunny is just over that rise..." --me

breathed life into alumni.lpi.org today... dns was busted (which was alright 'cause we hadn't decided to make it live yet!)

got asked wais advogato today... hmmmm.... some people should crawl out into the sunshine more often...

i love this one: Felten v. RIAA finally somebody is doing the right thing... i wish i could afford to test it... it surely makes me mad enough...

5 Jun 2001 (updated 5 Jun 2001 at 20:09 UTC) »

last weekend (june 1 through june 3): dealt with the upgrade of LPI's web server (what a pile of work that was) and got djb's new HP 24x6i tape drive/changer working. lots of fun with amanda (bad girl!) and mtx (good doggie!)

yesterday (june 4): spent the whole day cleaning up LPI's web site cvs. moved piles of crap out that shouldn't ever have been in there and just generally cleaning up the mess. finished the day with an LPI conference call and then went to my youngest boy's baseball game (fun, fun, fun). oh... i almost forgot... it turns out that RH changed the perm's on procmail in their 7.1 release. it breaks postfix... (including their own powertools release) and they didn't tell anybody so i yelled at bugzilla. oh... and wietse wasn't happy either...

today (june 5): more work on LPI's cvs, divying up the monolith into proper modules. hollering at the phpweblog geeks about issues, issues, issues! (Ping... ICMP... hello? :-) trying out this new fangled GUI diary thang (yes dyork that's red neck speak!) called Diary-GUI.py for Diary version 0.9. u kin git it ahat Diary.py. so... the module everybody in LPI was yelling at me about is up and circulating in cvs. maybe i can get some *real* work done now :-).

i see that ansimorph got some more certs... good for him. this week has been a bit hellish... lot of pressure coming from all over the place but I am slowly managing to wade through the garbage and get the important stuff done.

we're starting a new project to update the Level I tests for the Linux Professional Institute. i get to drive 8-)... we're gonna run this project simultaneously with the development of Level II which should be a lot of fun. i've got a pile of volunteer applications to wade through and select this weekend and i gotta get a new mailing list set up to support them.

dyork puts me to shame with the regularity of his diary entries... i dunno how he does it.

my youngest boy played in his first baseball game last tuesday night and he got a hit his first time at bat. i got pix! :-)

ah well... the weekend beckons... more hacking... some business stuff to do and if i'm lucky a few stolen hours fishing at the lake.

Ansimorph: people will cert you when, and if, they take the time to read about what you're doing... if your work warrants it then you get certed. The doesn't require that they be your best buddy... simply that the work is respected enough to warrant certification.

For my part, I happen to believe that grass roots work (like you're involved in) done in support of our world (e.g. OSS, GNU, BSD etc. etc.) is worthwhile and should be encouraged.

Don't worry.... be happy...

aaaaaaaaaaauuuuuugh! cvs permissions are driving me mad... but it looks like it's fixed now... damn sticky bits!

bad news everywhere... it's another dark, dark day... sucks!

Opinion

Hey phoon

dude... saying this:

"However, my primary point still stands: there is no way to prove (or disprove) that sex was consensual."

...is a big mistake! On the face of it your point could be argued from every which way and I understand what you're thinking... but you are making a huge fundamental error in thinking that rape has anything to do with sex. The two acts are not related to one another save that both involve an act of an "sexual" nature. The difference is that sex is always consensual and rape is a form of assault, "involuntary" sex is nothing but assault. In the statutes that's how it's often defined... it's an "assault" with the word "sexual" attached to it. Assault is not sex... it's violence!

dirty bird

Welp... here's the bad ass bird with a word for Mr. Mundie! Check it out:
I am a jelly donut!

projects

Gawd... cvs is everywhere... :-) Too much work to do and so little of me to go around...

it's been a few days... sorry's... et. al.

CD's... gawd what a pile... i finally gave in to spousal pressure and cleaned up my office... a part of that task was to eliminate some of the more dust-ridden CD's before the cabinet they were stacked in collapsed under their weight... now the trash can is immovable... ~sigh... I did find out that I've got every version of Red Hat going back to 2.x... woohoo... what a collection... :-)

but... the office is now in the most pristine state it's been in for quite a while... I even did some "non-vertical" filing... it won't last...

xfce is fixed... the race has been found and eliminated... not bad... it only took about 3 days of testing... Olivier has released 3.8.1 which is nice... turns out that the problem had been there for a long, long time and the recent changes which were adding new capabilities to xfce exascerbated it...

took lucas fishing yesterday... he was bored 'cause he doesn't yet have the patience to do the work it takes to fish "my" way... I caught 10 fish in a couple of hours... was fun for me and he was phreaked at the one "hawg" I caught... but he wouldn't hold it... "too big", he said... sometimes doing "non-geek" things is essential to my sanity... i saw the QA guy from RH down at the lake drowning worms... nice guy but that style of fishing just isn't my cup of tea... i spend enough time "inert"... gotta move don't ya' know...

i'm in the middle of typing my latest diatribe for moongroup.com... it should be ready to publish ina couple more days... the latest db `guin should be out in a couple of days also... this one will finish the sopranos spoof and then we're off to... well... read the strip and you'll see...

on the lpi front the new database host should be ready for work tomorrow... that will be interesting... it also looks like we're gonna start rolling forward on Level 2 pretty quick now and in all likelihood we'll be updating Level One in the near term as well... fun... fun... fun...

it looks like we're getting closer with 3.8. the sigsegv's only come every once in a while now... ~sigh... it's a race... no a *race* dammit... (:-) we haven't found it yet but if we don't pretty soon I'll have to run windowmaker... i have to get some work done... saw telsa's diary today... didn't know she was here... looks like somebody ham-handed the dns for linux.org.uk with a bull dozer or sumpthin'... :-) bummer... got Robin's studio/office up and running today... i hate moving... it's always such a pain in the backside... the final episode of the current dirty bird story will come out next week... i hope people catch on soon... the drawings have so much detail that they're just... just scrumptious... ah well... tomorrow's friday... i have an article to write and more testing to do... oh yeah... the new lpi database server is ready for install... it should be up by monday... mmmmm good.... (:-)
