Notes: I'm French, I live in Brittany (Quimper) and run Kemper DOC, a small localization, translation & documentation company which I founded 4 years ago. These are the activities into which I have the biggest experience. My first job (starting in 1987) was programmer in several software houses (for management information systems). I'm also a lecturer at Brest's Université de Bretagne Occidentale (like several other Free CATS project team members) at their new DESS (advanced graduate diploma) "Rédacteur et Traducteur". The two most important reasons for me to begin looking at free software are: - restrictions (sometimes blatant) found in proprietary software, without being able to do anything about it - a sign of a trend towards a more mature and more responsible society So, in late 2002, I decided to launch Free CATS project with the little spare time I have with the aim to give translation and localization professionals (including myself) a nice set of CAT (Computer-Aided Translation) tools to work with, instead of the very costly, proprietary and Windoze-only software we are forced to use today.
