Week In Review 2011W03

• Steve is on leave, Tim Cook is in. That didn’t do a big dent on the stock as they beat quarter revenue forecast by $2B. Yes, that’s 2 thousand million dollars.

• Nintendo 3DS in Europe in March for 250EUR. Hum.

• Wikileaks is going after Swiss Banking. Meanwhile, Reuters says the US Govt says Wikileaks didn’t do that much damage. And if nothing else, Wikileaks pushed a revolution in Tunisia.

• Newly appointed saint JP 2 instructed Irish catholic bishops to not report child abuse cases.

• Ah, yes. Verizon iPhone. Rejoice usaians. As a response Microsoft tries to block “App Store” trademark cause it’s too generic. I believe they did using word on windows and sent it with outlook.

• HP is definitely lauching a webOS tablet which might very well rock. On the other hand HP seems to imply webOS might make it netbooks too so don’t get your hopes up.

• Google drops H.264 from Chrome. For the sake of openness and all. Don’t worry, they still build Flash right into Chrome so you can still watch video. Confused ? It’s all very clear. All web video should be nonstandard webM which despite not having a spec already has hardware acceleration. Why do you keep getting confused ?

• Less than a week after I declared AMD as the CES MightHaveBeen AMD CEO resigns. I really need to take it easy pressuring this guys. And Ballmer seems unimpressed with having a well performing division and so Bob Muglia moved on from Server VP.

• Why am I calling you ? You don’t know me ? Why, because you sent a stupid gift to your friend on Facebook using my app and now I have both your phone numbers and addresses.

• 3DS might be useful as an eye testing tool. Really.

• Musicians sued the Canadian RIAA and own. This is an interesting case cause it shows not only the music industry makes it business practice not paying musicians (they even provision for it) and sets a standard compensation per track of around 150 canadian dollars. Meanwhile, facing a future of paying real money for invented stupidity, Euro ISP remind us “website blocks” don’t work. And remember USA trying to get info on Twitter users ? Some people in EU aren’t too happy about that.

• Dual core and LTE is all the rage.

• NVidia is going ARM all the way to the desktop. And Microsoft is right there waiting for them with Windows 8 announced for ARM SoCs. I still remember NT on Alpha. And pushing Windows from 32b to 64b was clearly a lost battle (as opposed to the rest of the world). Add that to Windows not being exactly hot stuff on an handheld and you have a recipe for not exactly success. The good bit is we’ll probably get some ARM netbooks and desktops out of it.

• This is clearly the Year of The Tablet. Honeycomb will make Android tablets not suck. And Motorola is bent on proving it with Xoom which actually looks good specially considering it’s from Motorola.

• Nintendo 3DS inches closer and doesn’t make people blind.

• CES Winner: NVidia. CES Loser: Intel. CES Mighthavebeen: AMD.

• On some non CES news Apple finally opened up the Mac App Store.

• YouTube is now a TV station in Italia. Yes, what you’re thinking. And some French Minister lied about legislation destined to allow police to crack and do otherwise illegal stuff. You know, the usual. Twitter stood up to US Govt about turning over Wikileaks followers. And Obama wants some kind of Internet ID in US which is supposed to be an ID but apparently is.

• Bad news for Nintendo as they imply the 3DS is not safe for children.

• WP7 Marketplace was cracked pretty easily. Not a shocking surprise. Samsung feeling brave for selling 10M Galaxy S phones is going after the iPod Touch.

• Putins says no to piracy and orders the great leap forward to Linux .

• The world is still waiting for Wikileaks about banks. Meanwhile Hungary slips back into a dictatorship

• Big splash this week was rumours about Microsoft porting Windows to ARM. This is priceless. I, for one, look forward to seeing Windows7 booting on a 600MHz ARMv6. You guys remember WinCE ? It ran on ARM. This smells of WindowsNT for Alpha.

• Microsoft sold 1.5M WP7 devices to carriers and retailers. Meanwhile Apple sold 1M AppleTV2 last week

• FCC approved a watered down version of net neutrality. The Dems voted for while the 2 Reps voted strongly against cause they didn’t feel it represented the views of the people lining their pockets. The FCC justified not imposing net neutrality on wireless cause there’s Android which I don’t quite understand. Do they mean people should get their Android phones from Google, root them and start tweaking the baseband ?

• UK has bold Internet censorship plans. Obviously, ISPs oppose as their business is selling access. Ars Technica did a bit of investigation about US Govt seizing domain names.

• On WikiLeaks news, the CIA put together WTF. The BoA keeps breaking in and burglarizing people’s homes and buys hundreds of domain names getting ready for what’s coming. Spain, cause it’s a still a western democracy, voted down the copyright law RIAA/MPAA wrote for them.

• Google Nexus S. It’s curvy. SAPO a5. It’s not curvy. Nokia will go on wasting time on Symbian.

• The French Govt now has an Internet discretionary blacklist that ISPs must enforce and so enters the Hall of Free Countries along with China. Meanwhile Bank of America stops transactions to WikiLeaks. Cause you know, they might be shady. What did you expect with that name ? They probably think they’re the Justice League of America or something :)

• On it’s funny cause it’s true time, book author slams sharing, “owns” huge stash of shared music. And on the grounds of restoring functionality the system had at purchase time PS3 jailbreaking in now legal in Spain.

• Pornscanners don’t actually work. But everybody knows that already. But speaking of real security, there’s a backdoor on some HP storage systems and the FBI apparently tried/managed to plant backdoors on OpenBSD.

• Are you dumber for watching Fox News or does watching Fox News makes you dumber ?

• Google decided to own the week by launching the Google eBooks store which is has some kind of Adobe DRM which doesn’t work with the Kindle and announcing the Cr-48 Chrome OS laptop full of Chrome and cloud goodness. Not to be outdone Amazon launched Kindle Web.

• NFC is probably the next big thing. VISA approved a microSD based solution

• Assange went on custody in Britain which is smart given he’s a subject of the Queen. Meanwhile, the USA is hosting the World Press Freedom Day 2011 and The Washington Post says ‘You’re Either With Us, or You’re With WikiLeaks’, the same WP that ran a oped asking why WikiLeaks didn’t go after North Korea. And after last week’s shenanigans with wikileaks.org.pt www.uiquiliques.org.pt went live.

• Nice to see Justice actually working with ACS:Law taking flak from all sides in UK for abusing the Court system.

• LTE in the US within the week ?. Could it be true ?

• Microsoft is lining up to screw over telcos selling xboxs as set top boxes. Is this a surprise to any one ? Meanwhile the EU is gearing up to go after Google.

• Huge WikiLeaks document drop with mainstream media picking up the gossip and the US declaring war on something. Coincidently, a Interpol Red Notice on Assange for “sex crimes” turned out to be about some obscure Swedish law about consensual sex without condoms but who cares cause USA doesn’t really cares about Red Notices. Sarah Palin says target WikiLeaks like Taliban. Or South Korea. She’s easily confused. As a result Amazon terminated WikiLeaks hosting and Paypal killed the WikiLeaks account. But it seems only Reps and Dems hate WikiLeaks in the USA, some americans find it refreshing and non federal cops even catch people acting unlawfully against it. Oh and USA writes Spanish laws. I can’t figure out if Portugal is too insignificant or too groveling we’re not having wikileaks.org.pt for some reason or other and stuff.

• All this stuff about WikiLeaks almost made people forget about TSA groping children like pedophiles and punishing mothers for wanting TSA to follow the rules of TSA.

• Update: ICANN didn’t have anything to do with pulling wikileaks.org. I got confused with ICANN pulling some other domains globally as part of a legal action in the USA.

• LTE in the US within the week ?. Could it be true ?

• I’m slightly confused about the open source symbian foundation as they seem to be closing down. And right after the EU wasted some millions on them.

• TSA wants you naked but gets upset if you get naked and they totally don’t want to see Congressman naked but they sometimes get distracted and miss 25cm steel razor blades. And the hip kids have even figured out a name for going through a TSA gate. But hey, the fun might come soon to trains all over the US so everybody can get free gropings. But not to Germany cause the germans are not fun at all.

• Was this a slow week ? Probably. Either that or I wasn’t paying attention to all the Kinetic hacks.
