Decided that this is getting me nowhere

Well I had my assessment day at VSO, and I think I totally messed up, coming across as a bumbling middle-class waster with no sense of direction. However, I always feel this about interviews!

Going to see Prof. Mel tonite, before she goes off to the US to be a Professor! This is only worrying if you know her!

Been toying with a vfs-method for rhythmbox, not sure what for, but it would be cool to see the rhythmdb stuff that Colin has done being used for more that just the rhythmbox application itself - i.e. when it is working I could use it to pick up stuff for the dashboard modules that I should have finished by now. Have not done anything other than have a play to see what it would look like.

Went to see QPR Vs. Wycombe Wanderers yesterday, £21 to see a nil-nil draw. Actually quite enjoyable.

Afterwards had a chat to my friend Nikki about VSO, as she has volunteered and been accepted. Looks like they give you a good going over, and try and get at all your weaknesses (which I can understand really). Been looking around my flat to see what stuff I can sell, and hit ebay in a big way soon ;-)

Been very lazy with coding, and have merely upgraded my desktop to Gnome 2.4, which looks great, and actually works well.

Well, not a lot has been going on, work has been as dull as ditch-water, life has been mundane!

However, I have volunteered and been asked to an assessment day at VSO, so things might get interesting real soon now.

Well its all slowed down due to my move and the fact that BT cannot find their collective rear with a mirror!
Looking at Rhythmbox documentation and the pjbvfs method to add a write mechanism, but all I have done is make it worse, I guess I should get it to work as a command-line program first and then put it into the library.

Its really hot in London, and quite nice on the heath (which is 30 seconds away from my new flat, yippee)!

Dashboard is moving too fast for me to keep up at the moment, my Rhythmbox backend is never in a working state for too long. Ho hum

Rhythmbox itself is starting to pick up again with Colin Walters trying to get a 0.5 release out to get the stable code out and about in the wilds, as it were.

Ok, I need to do the following ..
  • If a track already exists, then remove it and replace it with a new entry.
  • Send 'amazon' clues (* Need to find out how to do this *)

Hey, I just got mentioned in the the Gnome Summary. Thats so cool, I have never been so proud!

Not been doing much as I am right in the middle of moving (2/3 of my stuff is in my new flat, the PC is in the old one). Am trying to get the latest CVS version of mono to build, and then will update the patch for rhythmbox, will try and get it to see new clues so that the playing tracks album picture is got from amazon by the existing backend.

Have been continuing to work on the rhythmbox backend for dashboard. Nat has put up a list of backends, but this isn't on it yet, oh well. It is getting quite mature now - all I have to do is go through it and fix of the cruft I have put in due to not knowing anything about programming in mono.
Current features are ...
  • Shows currently playing track with metadata from rhythmbox
  • Shows last ten played tracks in a list.
  • Artist and album are clickable and take you to 'allmusic.com' entries.
  • Errm.
  • Thats it
There are a few things that would make this totally cool.
  • Clicking on track should play it in rb. Bit difficult that one.
  • Access to rhythmbox metadata should be via a (mythical) rhythmbox backend, so it would not take 15 seconds to load the 59000 entries that I have in the metadata.
  • Wish I could program in mono!
I am moving flat next week, so I'm guessing that I will not be working on this for a bit!

Re: Previous diary - its already there, sort of.
Have now got something really happening with the dashboard / rhythmbox link. It shows the details of the current track, and remembers the tracks that you have played and when! It should straight forward to show these tracks as a list, like the gaim log that already exists. This is quite fun, serves no purpose at all!

Success of a kind
