Well, there's at least one company who never made and do not currently make proprietary software (beside "open source" category). Did you find it?

(no doubt, some people will qualify this whole topic as troll)

Never made proprietary software, posted 24 Jan 2003 at 12:38 UTC by Omnifarious » (Journeyer)

Near as I can tell, it's RedHat.

As far as I know, most of those products do not have Open Source licenses at all. Am I mistaken in thinking this?

Correct, posted 24 Jan 2003 at 13:33 UTC by yeupou » (Master)

I think that you are perfectly right.

It's a small world, posted 24 Jan 2003 at 16:24 UTC by vinsci » (Master)

On the other hand, Red Hat worked on the Sony PlayStation 2, which as it happens employs a DRM scheme similar to Microsofts Xbox and TCPA/Palladium to ensure that memory chips in the machine are manufactured and sold by Sony and nobody else.

It would be nice to see Linuxworld do a similar list with only Open Source/Free Software products. Maybe we need a Debianworld...

Ximian would be another, posted 24 Jan 2003 at 20:39 UTC by fejj » (Master)

The Ximian software listed in the list above (Mono and Evolution) are also all Open Source.

Ximian is not another., posted 24 Jan 2003 at 21:32 UTC by yeupou » (Master)

For this reason, Ximian cannot be on that list (and it's not an hidden subproject but content of the ximian website front page).

Ximian does mostly Open Source, but not purely, posted 25 Jan 2003 at 05:42 UTC by Omnifarious » (Journeyer)

Yes, the Ximian products listed are Open Source, but Ximian is not purely an Open Source company. It has one (and only one that I know of) non-Open Source product. I'm betting it's because they only get to provide it because of a license from Microsoft.

Bugopolis?, posted 26 Jan 2003 at 13:47 UTC by gerv » (Master)

Well, the Bugopolis product contains Bugzilla and, as far as I can see from their website, they sell hardware with free software on top. So they don't sell proprietary software.

Any comment on CA's grabbing quite a few medals?

I believe here's another finalists list. Is there any question about open or closed source on this list?

More fun, posted 30 Jan 2003 at 09:16 UTC by yeupou » (Master)

Apparently Microsoft won in his category.

Well, everybody knows that Microsoft has done so much for « Open Source », so it really deserves an « Open Source Award ».
